McDonald’s Tray Gone Gourd Holder

September 22, 2008 – 4:50 pm

I planted gourds for the first time in my garden this year. I was excited to see them grow to the point where I felt comfortable snipping them from the long, winding stems. I should say, I’m using the word “comfortable” loosely. I would loved to have left the gourds on the vine a lot longer, but circumstances demanded I remove them a bit sooner. However, I’m pleased with the sizes of my first batch.

Upon reading up on the care of drying gourds, I believe the concensus is to allow them plenty of airflow and time to completely dry. I’ve noticed that some of the more experienced gourd growers and crafters space their gourds well. Some people even hang them for proper air circulation.

I have very limited outdoor space for optimum drying, but the space I have should be sufficient for my 4 veggies. Unfortunately, hanging the soon-to-be molding gourds in not an option. Hopefully the option I’ve come up with is a viable one, allowing for good airflow as well as proper spacing.

I’ve found McDonald’s drink trays to be quite sturdy and long-lasting. They are made of recycled materials and, boy, are they tough. My small collection of trays (8, so far) has come in very handy for various crafts and tasks around the house. I believe that, as gourd holders, they will survive the winter on a covered porch even if they get wet (at least I’m hoping!).

What are your thoughts? Any gourd experts out there?
