Even in an apartment, smaller wooden rails can be attached to the wall with brads or any other small nails without much damage. If you would rather skip using wooden rails altogether, one easy option is to use ribbon. If you’ve been anywhere near a craft or fabric store lately, you may have noticed there are loads of ribbon styles available. Measure your walls then grab one, two or even three ribbon choices to use as a chair rail.

| To determine the height of your chair rail, measure the height of the ceiling and divide it by three. The general rule is that the chair rail should be about 1/3 of the way up from the floor (between 32″ and 36″ for an 8′ ceiling). You can also slide a chair up to the wall and mark where it will hit on the wall. |
Your design application choices are limited only by your imagination. Align a single wide ribbon along the wall (about 3 feet from the floor) and attach to the wall with a thumbtack (Tip: hide the tack by folding the tacked end of the ribbon back over itself). For greater effect, apply another ribbon above or below the first one or lay a narrow ribbon on top of the first one.
At non-standard chair rail heights, ribbon can act as a divider between paint colors or as a topper for a line of wallpaper.

Not satisfied with your store’s ribbon choices? If you don’t mind spending a bit more, have your own ribbon printed. For under $100 you can have ribbon personalized with any text (and possibly image) you’d like.
The holidays are arriving. Ribbon is a great temporary design idea. Add some flare with red, green, or themed ribbon.
Feeling artsy-crazy? Declutter and decorate at the same time by getting rid of those old VHS tapes. Unscrew the video tape covers and you’ve got yourself a nice length of shiny black ribbon. Just be careful to not over-handle the ribbon as it can show wrinkles.
Another option is to use self-adhesive paper lace (as seen at Click to visit this external linkMartha’s Choice). The lace designs can be attached directly onto ribbon, vhs tape or kraft paper so walls suffer no damage and the decor remains portable.
