Introduction

Short on headboard ideas? This Seriously Cheap series shows some easy decoration ideas to add a bit of pizazz to that space above the head of your bed. Each of these ideas can be used as the headboard alone, or as an added touch to the wall area at the head of the bed.

Wikipedia says “The headboard is a piece of furniture that attaches to the head of a bed. Its most basic function is to retain the pillow(s) and other bed linens.” I believe a headboard need not be a bulky piece of furniture, nor does it need to keep pillows in place. Creating a headboard is the perfect way to anchor the bed visually and help define the spaces of a room. If it happens to look good while doing so, then all the better!

Part 2 – Make a statement with jewels on a string

Actually, let’s make that many (faux) jewels on several strings, adding a bit of bling to any room.

When I say jewels, I don’t mean those precious stones passed down from your great-grandmother. I mean those shiny trinkets you can get from online shops and local craft stores. After all, we are talking cheap and easy here.

The basic premise of this headboard design is the use of a clear or translucent hanging material strung with beautiful accents to create a dramatic effect in one’s bedroom. The end result is the look of floating jewels above the head of the bed. Lighting can enhance the effect creating extra sparkle.

Let’s make it happen!

1. Choose your style.

jewelSame as with the upholstery tack headboard, what goes best with your current decor may be the deciding factor in your jewel style choice. I prefer the crystal look (but, boy, if I could only afford to hang real diamonds on my wall!). The clear shine of crystal, or even crystal-like jewels, can be mesmerizing.

cjewelryThere is a myriad of jewel choices available. Take a trip to a couple of thrift stores and pick up some necklaces and bracelets from days gone by.

cjewelrybIf you’re having a difficult time finding just the right look, consider using different types of jewels for the same project, just in the same color family. Different sizes and designs can work well together with only the color being the common factor. Or, if you’re feeling a little wild and crazy, use a variety of jewels ranging in color, shape, style and size.

Alternative finds: Crafters are familiar with beads and know many beads can be as chic as high-end jewels. They make for great low-cost stand-ins and come in a limitless amount of varieties. Those who are financially crafty can find premade strings of beads (beaded lines, beaded curtains, etc.) as a handy alternative (the premade strings, however, tend to have beads that are clumped closely together giving a different overall effect).

2. Gather your supplies and apply.

wcuphookThe easiest method for getting your jeweled flinelines up is by stringing them with fishing line and hanging them by small white cup hooks. Fishing line is an inexpensive, easy-to-find item at most stores (check the outdoor section). It’s also quite strong. Cup hooks are also quite inexpensive, running around $1 for a set of 4. They can be hand-screwed into most ceilings with ease.

Alternative method 1: Go high-tech and use a sturdy hanging system that uses turnbuckles and cable. While this method takes a few more supplies and involves a bit more effort, the result is a secure hanging system that allows the jeweled lines to be moved freely (something that cannot be done easily once cup hooks are in place). The look is more industrial, which, when paired with elegant, can be quite the combo. finialThe article Click to visit this external linkHow To: Hang Curtains Across Any Space at Apartment Therapy provides detailed instructions.

Alternative method 2: With all the beautiful varieties available, why not use a curtain rod high above the bed? There are so many finishes and colors available, not to mention the vast array of finial choices, that the options are unlimited. Tip: With the jewels hanging down the center, lace the sides of the curtain rod with smooth, free-flowing white curtain sheers for an added dramatic effect.

Lastly, as always, step back, enjoy, and take a picture.

You’re done! Take a step back and be proud of your new decor. Be sure to take some before and after shots and share your designs with us!
